Some fire safety tips
Allow some ventilation in a room with any type of fire in it. Don’t block air bricks or vents.

Keep chimneys and flues clear. If you have a solid fuel fire, have the chimney swept once a year, twice if you burn wood.

In a wood burning stove, use dry, seasoned wood. Run the stove hot for half an hour when you add fresh fuel to avoid tar build-up in the flue, which in turn might lead to a chimney fire.

Have your gas fires serviced once a year, to check for adequate ventilation, gas leaks, and that the flue is unblocked.
The fireplace professionals
The National Fireplace Association is the UK trade association for the industry. NFA members work to a charter to ensure high standards of product and delivery. So, when you purchase a fire or fireplace, check whether the supplier is a member of the NFA. You'll find lots of useful consumer information on this site and - essential reading - a free Fireplace Safety leaflet which you can read online or download.
